If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, it may be time to consider a RIP. What is a RIP? RIP stands for Raster Image Processor. A RIP program is similar to the print driver included with your printer, but with much more control (and features).

A RIP is designed to handle many files, file types, and file sizes without limiting your print capabilities. A RIP efficiently processes your files faster and more consistently, resulting in faster print times and less waiting. Have you ever tried to run a large image where the file size was more than 300MB?

Through the standard print driver, this can be cumbersome and time consuming. With a dedicated program designed to process large files, this task becomes much easier and allows you to work on other projects while your image is processing. A RIP will give you complete control over handling your files including: scaling, rotating, color correction, color profiling to a wide array of media types, multiple copies, nesting, and much more. Most RIPs will process your entire file and then send it to the printer, meaning you’ll have consistent output with no lagging. This is because the RIP will only start to buffer data when all of the data is processed, rather then processing/buffering/printing at the same time (as print drivers typically do). With larger files, processing them entirely before sending them to the printer will keep them running at the fastest speed possible (this is determined by the media profile/print mode/speed you have selected in the RIP).

Having these options will “open up” your printer’s capabilities and give you complete control over how things will print. Nesting/Layout Have you ever wanted to maximize the use of your media? Want to cut back on waste?

Want to print multiple files at the same time? A RIP makes all of this possible with its nesting features. Nesting allows you to combine many different files onto one print job. This works just like making your canvas size larger in Photoshop’s “Canvas Size” and adding files by copying them to 1 file (to see this process, take a look at the #4 tip in our monthly article). In other words: Let’s say you have a 36″ roll and you have 3 files to print, each sized at 8″x10″. With a RIP, you can rotate each image so 10″ is the width (left to right when facing the printer), and lay these 3 files next to each other, enabling you to print all 3 images while only using about 8″ of media.

The RIP will allow you to drag files to a specific location so you can arrange you images to best fit onto the roll you are printing with. Multiple Printers With a RIP, you can run multiple printers from the same computer simultaneously, and without slowing anything down. You can process/print/prepare files for each printer to maximize production. A RIP will give you the ability to calibrate and profile each printer so you can achieve accurate and consistent colors between all connected printers. This is especially useful if you have 2 or more printers that all output the same media because instead of having to dedicate 1 printer to 1 job, you can run that job on any printer (or split it up and use all printers). The Linearization process accomplishes this by finding the original printing state of each printer (in terms of color output), thus “dialing in the printer” to its factory standard of output.

Since normal use of a printer causes it to “drift” from its original state, the linearization process brings the printer back to where it needs to be. A real world comparison of this would be like adjusting the alignment of the tires on your car. Over time, wear and tear on a car’s tires can cause the car to drift slightly to one side, but a tire alignment brings you back to the original state of the vehicle’s steering, which is straight. Color Management RIPs can make a significant impact on your. Along with Linearization, most RIP programs give you the ability to create your own ICC profiles without needing additional software. While this can be accomplished using the standard printer driver, you have many more options and control through a RIP.

Most standard print drivers force you to choose an existing media type that is already installed in the driver. You have little control adjusting the ink capacity (maximum amount of ink a particular media can hold without pooling), and have no control over linearizing a particular type of media. With a RIP, you are creating the media type and storing it in the RIP by entering the name of the media you are using. This process is also useful if you have 2 or more of the same printer model. You can essentially create a profile on 1 printer and simply copy it over to the next printer.

If you are using 2 or more printers and each printer is a different model, you are still able to get accurate color prints with the profiling process in the RIP. This is especially useful if you have aqueous and solvent printers. RIP Software Recommendations While there are many different RIP programs out there, I’ll list a few of the more commonly used RIPs in the industry:. A colleague of mine would say that linearization is doing the “heavy lifting” prior to profiling your inkjet device. I know that your list of RIP vendors was not intended to be exhaustive but you left out perhaps one of the most unique and highest quality RIP vendors out there: GMG. While GMG is primarily know for it’s extreme accuracy in the proofing market, it also makes for an excellent photo and fine art RIP where accuracy and repeatability are of primary concern. It’s pricey for sure but it may be worth checking out for some of your customers involved in the high-end fine art market. I didn’t see it mentioned in your article but perhaps THE reason for someone to consider investing in a RIP would be use of 3rd party media. By “3rd party” media, I mean media that is not directly supported by the printer vendor’s driver.which generally means ANY media that doesn’t have the printer vendors name on it.

You can virtually guarantee that you’re not likely going to get optimum results using a 3rd party media using the “canned” media settings available in the typical print driver. Using a RIP, you can generally create a completely custom printing environment that can be optimized for virtually any media you choose. Things like linearization and ink limiting that are “hard-wired” in a printer driver can be completely customized in a RIP. It can take considerable expertise to get the most out of a RIP (and it.requires.

a spectrophotometer for this) but the results might be worth it if you’re interested in the best possible output for your media. Overall, good article and overview of RIP software. Although you do have a little control over ink capacity (Color Density adjustment in the Epson driver), it is no where near the control you would have with a RIP. Great points on Linearization too! I didn’t want to get all “techy” on the ins and outs of linearization but there’s a lot of confusion out there on what “calibration” is vs. What “profiling” is all about. From a color management point of view, they really serve two different functions. I figured you had it right but just thought I’d another 3 cents in there. It’s a difficult line to walk trying to explain RIPs accuratelybut at the same time not make them sound intimidating to the average user. Your article straddled that line pretty good I thought. I was trying to find an easy way to describe what the linearization process actually does. I’ve used the “tire alignment” analogy in the past and people seem to understand it better that way. I forgot one often overlooked advantage of using RIP software.RIP software is generally immune to operating system updates that affect color management. RIP software generally completely bypasses OS-level printer drivers and communicates with a printer directly using their own proprietary “driver” and screening. Anybody that has been the victim of a a Mac or Windows OS update that completely hosed their color and printer settings and/or made it virtually impossible to disable color management to profile their printer properly can maybe appreciate this advantage of using RIP software. A device link can create a direct “mapping” of the color spaces between source and destination. Instead of being forced to choose between a relative or perceptual rendering intent, which both have their limitations, a GMG “MX4” device link profile can create a direct gamut mapping and a “tunable” rendering intent. Since both the input/output color spaces known when the device link is created, the gamut mapping of out-of-gamut colors is optimal. This is in contrast to an ICC relative/perceptual conversion where the output is NOT known when the conversion takes place (many people mistakenly think that the perceptual intent “knows” something about the destination/output color space and magically brings all the out-of-gamut colors in-gamut for output.this is not the case).

Just like the Epson driver, you are able to create custom sheet sizes, but in a RIP there is no limit to the length. I do this with ColorBurst frequently when I want to have a bit more control over the color conversion.

As far as linearization and profiling using the z3100’s internal spectro, you don’t have any.direct. control over ink limiting (media type is pretty much your only control) and you don’t have control over what sort of linearization it’s doing and what type of profile it’s creating. I’ve created profiles using my z2100 and I can tell you that they’re no where near the quality of good custom profiles made with something like i1Profiler or equivalent. I’m also pretty sure they are RGB profiles instead of CMYK which means you don’t have any control over total ink limit and black generation/GCR. Regards, Terry. Great questions Aaron. RIPs don’t accept PSD files, so you’ll want to flatten the file (Flatten Image in the Layers Palette options).

Save as a TIF or JPG, No compression. Your file will be much smaller, but probably still larger than 750 MB. With a RIP, it will be able to handle that size file without issues. Back in my production days, I can recall 1 job where I was printing 1GB files through Onyx to a solvent printer, and although you still have to wait for the file to rip, it would always work and print the entire job. With a RIP, it will accept RGB or CMYK files. Unless you are using a solvent printer that strictly requires CMYK profiles, you should be fine. Just in case, you should download.

Click on Profile Targets, then Eye-One Targets and download the ZIP. He has created RGB and CMYK targets that you can use. Be sure to copy the Reference Files to the proper location on your HD (Find the i1 Profiler folder on your computer and you will be able to locate the Reference Files folder there). Then, you can print the targets with the same name (as the Reference File) and go from there.

Hope this helps! These types of printers don’t typically have printer drivers available and MUST work with RIP software. You may need to purchase a copy of Versaworks separately (or look at Onyx or Colorburst). RIPs can be challenging to create profiles for and color manage, if your media provider supplies media profiles, that would be OK, but I would strongly suggest hiring a color management professional to calibrate your printer to each media type that you use. This can be quite cost efficient, and is something that should be done on a regular basis as a “preventative maintenance type of procedure. I believe that Versaworks has a few flaws in the way it rips some artwork and they don’t appear until we are printing. Is this common with other rips?

We were sent an eps file that opened in corel badly so I opened it in illustrator and then saved it as a PDF prior to ripping. On the screen it was fine and the print out from my desktop printer was also fine, yet the image printed showing a different interpretation of the blend and a transparency appeared that I wasn’t even aware existed.

It was a simple 6mb file worth nothing as a job that we now have to reset the artwork and re print! Please confirm I am not losing my mind! Hi Antonio, Starting to use a RIP is rarely ever the answer for poor color accuracy. More than likely, this will be even more complicated and introduce more issues. Which media are you using? I’d venture to guess that the ICC profiles you are using are just poor quality.

Have you contacted your media manufacturer/supplier? Do you have the ability to create your own profiles?

It may be worth investing in a spectrophotometer like a ColorMunki to dial your medias in yourself. You could also try Epson’s advanced black and white mode from their driver.

We still run the Mac versions of colorbursts fully fledged RIPs, Colorburst X-Proof, for fourty colour managed Macs. Through them our photography students print to either an epson 4000 or 7900. I like the older colorburst RIP software (X-Proof etc). The support colorburst use to offer through their web based forums was a large added-value to their RIP products. Both to access expertise and to search through. Unfortunately these forums have been dropped.

But they must have been expensive to staff. I have been keeping an keen eye out for a replacement for our X-Proof Rips. We have dedicated Macs here running OS10.7 so we can use X-Proof, but we won’t be able to run 10.7 forever. So I’m very interested in this discussion. And Having Scott Martin’s expert input is really appreciated and gives me much food for thought.
