I prefer the Dead over the Airplane. And I prefer the Airplane over the Dead. I love both bands.
I hate both bands. Forgive this post, for I am only human. Forgive this post, for I am not of this world. INTERPRETATION:It depends on the song or collection of songs,or albums.both bands suffered because of overuse of psychedelics & god knows what else. Both bands had talent & worked hard, but then fell into the stupid hippie image pleasure seeking mode which in turn ruined their eventual output. They became thusly idiots, which is,of course, their human right.Zappa was too smart for that kind of shit. His brain cells thus were kept relatively intact.(Sometimes I think California was made into some kind of open concentration camp where all kinds of drugs were dispensed by the Government). I voted JA again.
Blues For Allah Grateful Dead
Nothing really against the Dead - their 'Live Dead' album is at least as good as anything by the Airplane - but Airplane had a certain restless intensity that I identify with (as opposed to the kick-back-and-burn-one vibe the Dead parlay. Not that the Airplane didn't spark up their fair share of J's). In the last thread, Trendmonger protested the very existence of this kind of thread, saying that pitting one artist against another in a boxing-match sort of competition is inappropriate. While I agree in spirit, I also think that that is not the point of this thread at all. It's merely a fun way of expressing your own personal preference.
The 'vs' is just an exciting sounding phrase. Check this out: Hillary vs. Doesn't that get your blood moving? Doesn't that make you want to drink some beer and eat some peanuts and shake your fist in the air?
Am I taking this too far? Last point, back on topic: The Jefferson Airplane's 'Volunteers', while not a fantastic album in itself, has one of the funniest album covers I've ever seen. If you don't have the vinyl, try to find it in a used shop some day and open it up and read inside.
Frickin' hilarious. Not that doing this is actually evil or life-threatening or whatever, but I see it as dragging music into the same place where sports and politics live. That's a weird place for artists to be. Reminds me of: 'In a 1984 interview with a British fanzine, Zappa was asked whether he felt underrated as a guitarist.
'I think I shouldn't be rated as a guitarist!' He shot back. 'Rating guitarists is a stupid hobby. There's no way to rate that. You either like that kind of entertainment or you don't. I voted that I equally love both bands.
US Billboard definitely favors The Airplane over The Dead. Note: My copy of Billboard is an old 5th edition, which is complete through July 27, 1991. US Billboard Top 40 Jefferson Airplane/Starship Formed as Jefferson Airplane in San Francisco, 1965. Consisted of Marty Balin and Signe Anderson (vocals), Paul Kantner (vocals, guitar), Jorma Kaukonen (guitar), Jack Casady, bass and Alexander 'Skip' Spence (drums). Grace Slick and Spencer Dryden joined in 1966, replacing Anderson and Spence. Slick had been in the Great Society.
Spence then formed Moby Grape. Dryden replaced by Joey Covington in 1970. Casady and Kaukonen left by 1974 to go full time with Hot Tuna.
Balin left in 1971, rejoined in 1975, by which time group was renamed Jefferson Starship and consisted of Slick, Kantner, Papa John Creach (violin), David Frieberg (bass), Craig Chaquico (pronounced: chuck-ee-so; guitar), Pete Sears (bass) and John Barbata (drums). Slick left group from June 1978 to January 1981 due to personal problems. In 1979, singer Mickey Thomas joined (replaced Balin), along with Aynsley Dunbar who replaced Barbata. Don Baldwin (formerly with Snail) replaced Dunbar (later with Whitesnake) in 1982. Kantner left in 1984, and, due to legal difficulties, band's name was shortened to Starship, whose lineup included Slick, Thomas, Sears, Chaquico and Baldwin. Slick left in early 1988. In 1989, the original 1966 lineup – Balin, Slick, Kantner, Kaukonen and Casady – reunited as Jefferson Airplane with Kenny Aronoff (formerly with John Cougar Mellencamp) replacing Dryden.
Continuing as Starship were Thomas, Chaquico, Baldwin, Brett Bloomfield (bass) and Mark Morgan (keyboards). Starship disbanded in 1990. Dead, Dead, Dead! Donte get me wrong, they are 2 completely different bands.
The Airplane is a harder edgier Rock and Roll Band The Dead started off as a Jug Band, bluegrass, kinda country. MELLOW Stuff These bands, since the beginning have been great friends. They play DIFFERENT styles music, both of which happened to be intertwined with the psychedelic revolution that started there in San Fransisco. Obviously the Airplane/Starship with or without the Jefferson had much more commercial success than the Dead. It was the touring aspect of the Dead that made them successful. This is something that the airplane or any other band in history has yet to repeat.
Phish was a close second, they just couldn't or didnt have the longevity to compare. 2 Great Bands, that play totally different music, each great in its own way.
My Vote is for the Dead, all day! My brother was a major Deadhead.
He estimates he saw the Dead play 150 times. He once told me something that he called Jerry's Law: if you saw ten Dead shows, three of them would be absolutely great, three would suck, and the other four would be pretty good. I saw them once: they were okay.
Guess it wasn't my day. Out of the 50 some odd Dead shows I personally attended between '84 - '95, the best and most consistantly well performed were between '87 - '90. The whole thing started to fall apart after their 4th keyboardist, Brent Mydland passed away days after their '90 east coast/mid-west summer tour. I saw the Grateful Dead once, while Pigpen was still alive. It was in 1968, and I was 18 years old. It was the very first time The Dead performed in Washington, DC.
They were at McDona Arena, Georgetown University. The opening act was The New Riders Of The Purple Sage, which was considered a poor-man's version of The Dead. My friends and I had tickets, but thousands of freaks (we called ourselves 'freaks' back then) without tickets showed up. Some of them pretty much ripped off the front doors from their hinges to gain access. The school eventually placed loud speakers outside to quell the mob.
I enjoyed the show and had no idea as to goings-on until I exited the building. I had a great time. I was tripping on Orange-Barrel Sunshine. What can I say? The same riot was repeated at McDona Arena later that year when I attended a show featuring Traffic. The opening act was Cactus.
Aaaahhhh. Those were the days. Ahhhhhh Orange Barrels very very good stuff. I'm not a die hard dead head but i do like the band, I saw them on July 28 1973, at Watkins glen, Three day event, one other band the allman brothers, one day for each band and a third to jam together, there was over 600,000 people there, larger and more fun than wood stock!! They were both great. I have to agree not every Dead concert was great musically, unlike King Crimson, I saw them in 69 in a small club in NYC and they blew away every one, like they always did. Note: My copy of Billboard is an old 5th edition, which is complete through July 27, 1991.

Mastering Note: If you're reading this, you probably are aware of the fact that two different mixes of this album exist: the original from 1969 and the remix from 1971 which has since graced almost every reissue. Apparently, the original production 1969 tapes where lost or thrown out somewhere along the way, because they were never used again after the initial release. Only once was the original mix ever reissued, as part of a 2010 vinyl-only box-set.
However, it used an inferior master (very dull sound with strong use of noise reduction). Hard to believe that one got okayed, considering the meticulous standards the band holds when it comes to remastering their studio and live recordings. This new version serves two points: 1) the original mix has fine fidelity, or at least much better than the 180gr reissue would have you believe, and 2) the original version rocks! I consider it far superior to the revisionist remake, which mostly tends to clean up the rough spots and minimize the overall chaotic and psychedelic atmosphere. Lastly, the attentive listener may notice a few clicks and distortion; these are part of the original recordings. Despite claims that the original master was used on the 2013 high-definition remastering for download, it uses the remixed version (again). Note: This is probably one of my favorite Dead LPs.
It is the only place where the band's blues roots, the earlier psychedelic leanings, and the later country rock-influenced songwriting come together. Reportedly, the album cost $180,000 to make, and that included the aborted earlier sessions, leaving the band deeply in debt with their record company Warner Bros. Although the Dead would go on to clean up their financial difficulties and achieve greater success with the following two studio albums, this album stands as a testimonial to the band's eclectic genius (though any deadhead will now probably tell me the real gold's in the live recordings).
