Unassuming in appearance as in manner, Armstrong, 45, cuts a unique figure in contemporary music. As roaming ambassador between the worlds of pop, classical and film soundtrack, over the past 10 years he has - deep breath - arranged orchestral settings for Madonna and U2; scored some humongous movies, including Moulin Rouge and; co-written songs with Massive Attack and been commissioned to write orchestral works by, among others, the London Sinfonietta (for whom he composed a tribute to Stockhausen in 2001) and the Scottish National Orchestra.
